History of BMI
The BMI formula was developed by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet between 1830 and 1850 — initially as a tool for studying population statistics, not for assessing individual health. It was originally called the Quetelet Index. American physiologist Ancel Keys coined the term "Body Mass Index" in 1972 after studying 7,500 men across five countries and finding it was the best weight-for-height index for epidemiological purposes.
The WHO adopted the current classification thresholds in 1995, and they have remained largely unchanged since. Important Limitations of BMI

BMI Does Not Measure Body Fat Directly
BMI measures weight relative to height — it cannot distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. A professional athlete with very low body fat might have the same BMI as a sedentary person with high body fat because muscle is denser than fat. BMI Does Not Account for Fat Distribution
Where body fat is stored matters significantly for health outcomes. Visceral fat (stored around the abdomen and internal organs) carries much higher cardiovascular and metabolic risk than subcutaneous fat (stored under the skin).
