The underlying formula was developed in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet as part of his work in "social physics," originally called the Quetelet Index — conceived purely as a population-statistics tool, never as an individual diagnostic measure. The term "Body Mass Index" was popularized much later by physiologist Ancel Keys in a 1972 study comparing several height-weight indices.
